Selection guide Selection guide With our cutting tools for indexable milling, you get high productivity and long tool life, helping you deliver plenty of components out of the workshop door. This selection guide is designed to help you quickly identify the most suitable tools and inserts for your specific applications, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency. The aim is to have a strategy suited to the component, machine and number of parts to be machined, giving a maximum metal removal rate, Q cm3/min (in3/min) that can be balanced with an economic tool life. Analyze component Analyze the component’s shape and features. • Identify the workpiece material • Define if the feature is a flat surface, deep cavity, thin wall, slot, etc. • Evaluate the quality demands on tolerance, surface finish etc. • Consider the batch size Cutting depth (ap) and cutting ap width (ae) Assess the cutting depth, cutting width and corner radius requirements. ae Axial depth of cut (ap) is what the tool removes in metal on the face from the workpiece. This is the distance the tool is set below the unmachined surface. Radial cutting width (ae) is the width of the component engaged in cut by the diameter of the cutter. It is distance across the surface being machined or, if the tool diameter is smaller, that covered by the tool. 4
