OPERATIONAL GUIDANCE APPLICATION RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ENTERING ON AN IRREGULAR SURFACE 1. Spotting the Hole • Use an end mill to mill a small flat or use a spot drill to spot a drill point into the irregular surface (whether that be a cast/forged, inclined, or a curved face) • Either the flat or the spot must be the same diameter or slightly larger than the pilot drill diameter • If spotting, the spot drill must have a larger point angle than the pilot drill APPLICATION RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ENTERING ON A FLAT SURFACE 1. Drilling a Pilot Hole • Pilot drills must have a larger (flatter) point angle than the drills that follow and it’s designed into the KenDrill Micro portfolio • Select the shortest Length-to-Diameter pilot drill appropriate for the application: 1 or 2xD, 7xD piloting for 50xD deep-hole drills • A 2xD KenDrill Micro may drill up to 3xD in blind applications • A high-precision pilot hole will deliver the best deep-hole drilling performance 2. Drilling the Deep Hole • Enter the pilot hole, spinning in reverse with high-pressure coolant off • Spindle Speed: 500-1000 RPM, counterclockwise • Feed Rate: 1000-2000mm/min (39.4-78.7 IPM) • Stop the drill 1-3mm (.039-.118") short of the pilot drill • Switch to clockwise rotation at the recommended spindle speed and turn high-pressure coolant on • Feed in at the recommended feed rate for your application • Feed continuously—pecking is not recommended unless there are extreme circumstances • Apply dwell times at feed transitions to ensure coolant changes and spindle accelerations are fully complete 12
