GBP 57 Rescue signs and fire protection signs must be made of a long-lasting luminescent material if there is no adequate emergency lighting. According to ASR A1.3 point 3.17, a safety sign with long-lasting luminescence remains illuminated after the general lighting has failed without any further energy supply. Long-lasting luminescence signs are subject to DIN 67510. This standard specifies the minimum light density values of the material. The light density indicates the lighting intensity which the safety sign continues to emit after removal of the light source. It is stated in millicandela per square metre (mcd/m2). The standard specifies the minimum values to be obtained after 2, 10, 30 and 60 minutes after the end of the excitation period. Depending on these values, the sign is classified into class A to C in accordance with DIN 67510-1. Class C constitutes the highest value. Changes to the technical regulations for workplaces were published in March 2022. Important adjustments were made, in particular relating to ASR A2.3 (escape routes and emergency exits) and ASR A1.3 (health and safety signs). Long-lasting luminescence safety signs must meet the requirements of DIN 67510-1 Class C as a minimum. Since this is only a guideline, the symbols with reduced light density (old standard) can still be used. However, if this is the case, a risk assessment must be carried out to ensure that the requirements are met. It is recommended to switch to luminance class C signs in order to easily comply with ASR and to provide legal certainty regarding presumption of conformity.
