IM AUGE IMMER Information . on eye protec tion. Wissenswerte s zum Thema Augenschutz . New standard for eye protection: EN ISO 16321 – the main changes. The EN 166 standard has been valid without any changes since 2001. A number of changes have now been made, resulting in the creation of standard EN ISO 16321, which replaced the EN 166 standard in November 2024. Certificates issued under EN 166 will remain valid until their respective expiration date. The tests defined in EN ISO 16321 can already be used for new certifications. For this reason, over the next few years there will be eye protection products on the market that have been certified either to EN 166 or to EN ISO 16321. The main changes from EN 166 to EN ISO 16321 relate to the markings for the lenses and frame: Important changes in terms of reference codes include: ■ New resistance levels “C”, “D” and “E” for impact resistance. ■ “HM” refers to the “high mass impact”. (Protection against larger objects at low speed). ■ References codes for the welding protection filter with the letter “W” or “B”. ■ The UV filter is no longer identified with a 2 (EN 166), but with a U (EN ISO 16321). ■ “CH” for resistance to chemicals. Additional protection symbols Some reference codes remain the same, such as ■ “T” for guaranteed resistance at – 5 to + 55°C. 6 Protection against liquid flows ■ “K” for scratch resistance. 7 Protection against radiated heat ■ “N” for anti-fogging protection. 8 Protection against electric arcs 9 Protection against molten metal The head shapes have changed for each test. EN 166 only had tests with two head shapes – and hot solid bodies small and medium. In contrast, there are now three shapes with EN ISO 16321 – CH Resistance to chemicals small, medium and large. This is intended to cover an even greater variety of head shapes. K Scratch resistance In the mechanical strength test, a small steel ball is shot at the lenses. N Anti-fogging protection The shape of the ball has also changed. It previously had a diameter of 22 mm. Now, it is larger R Protection against amplified radiation due to IR and has a diameter of 25 mm. The weight has also changed from 43 g to 66 g. 31
